Understand the symptoms

What it feels like

Stroke Recovery can feel different for everyone. You may experience one or more of the following:

  • Weakness on one side

Difficulty using an arm or leg.

  • Balance problems

Feeling unsteady or at risk of falls.

  • Reduced hand function

Trouble with grip or fine movements.

  • Fatigue

    Tiring more easily than before.

  • Stiffness or spasticity

Tight muscles that make movement harder.

Why it happens

Common causes

  • A blocked blood vessel in the brain (ischaemic stroke)
  • Bleeding in the brain (haemorrhagic stroke)
  • Risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes and smoking
  • The effects depend on which part of the brain was affected

When to seek help

When to see a physiotherapist

Early assessment and the right exercises can help reduce pain, improve movement and prevent the problem from coming back.

You should see a physiotherapist if:

  • You have recently come home from hospital after a stroke
  • Walking, transfers or balance are difficult
  • You want to use your arm or hand more
  • You have had falls or are worried about falling
  • Progress has slowed and you want a fresh plan

Seek urgent medical care if you:

  • Face drooping, arm weakness or slurred speech — signs of a new stroke (think F.A.S.T.)
  • A sudden, severe headache
  • Sudden confusion or loss of vision
  • A fall with a head injury

If you have any of these, call Rescue 1122 or go to your nearest emergency department — don’t wait for a physiotherapy appointment.
